Feb. 20--From the outside, you might think Nan Spiegel has it made. But she feels caught in a pinch.
Her father owned a prosperous printing company in Miami. Before he died four years ago, he was able to set up three trusts now worth more than $1.5 million for his wife and two daughters.
Spiegel's mother, now 85, has suffered from Alzheimer's for 20 years. She lives in a nursing home and the trusts take care of all her needs.
Nan, at age 54, has worked as an administrative assistant and she holds a master's in library science. But she is beset with some health issues that she says prevent her from holding down a full-time job.
As a result, she is trying to make ends meet only on the modest distribution from one of the trusts -- about $30,000 a year.
