In the 1980s, America was introduced to a travel writer by the name of Macon Leary, first in Anne Tyler's novel "The Accidental Tourist," and later in Lawrence Kasdan's movie of the same title. Leary, as you may recall, lived in Baltimore, where he wrote guidebooks for people, specifically businessmen, who hated to travel. He himself was deeply attached to his city, his old house, his distempered corgi, and he roamed the globe with the sole objective of finding things that made him feel as if he'd never left home. He was every national tourist board's nightmare, the impetus behind diversity training, Rick Steves' evil twin.
