HOLLYWOOD, FLA. -- When office staff feud or become unproductive under stress, step in and make positive requests to change the behavior of the most troublesome employees, said Larry Harmon, Ph.D., a psychologist with a private practice in Miami.
About 99% of staff workers who exhibit disruptive behavior can be rehabilitated in some way The key is to find what motivates people in your office to work well together even under stress, Dr. Harmon advised at the annual meeting of the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.
He pointed out four basic motivations that distinguish what each employee wants to accomplish at work:
* Some people are driven to get things done, and this is more important than anything else in their work.
* Other people are motivated to get things right and are attuned to details.
* A third group of workers puts getting along with others at the top of their list. "They like feeling like they're a part of a group" and seek the approval of others, Dr Harmon said.
* The fourth group of employees seeks appreciation for their work and relishes the awards and gratitude they receive.
