Bacterial vaginosis increases susceptibility to herpes simplex virus type 2, Dr. Thomas L. Cherpes and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh reported.
Of 670 sexually active, HSV-2-seronegative women (aged 18-20 years), 32 (5%) developed HSV-2 antibodies within 1 year of study initiation.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of acquiring HSV-2 infection (hazard ratio 2.1).
The population attributable risk of BV for HSV-2 seroconversion in this study was 21%.
