LOS ANGELES -- A brief questionnaire is proving to be a highly effective screening test for osteoporosis.
The Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Tool (ORAT) consists of five questions that patients can answer in the waiting room. It was developed by the Florida Osteoporosis Board, with oversight by Dr. Joanne Valeriano-Marcet of the University of South Florida, Tampa, and funding from Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Aventis Pharmaceuticals through the Alliance for Better Bone Health. Four of the questions concern a woman's age, weight, and use of estrogen or steroids.
