Yigal Azrouel, like Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, is from Israel, where he spent his entire three-year army stint sketching dresses. Azrouel-who has a very attractive store in New York's Meatpacking District-made his first foray into the Paris scene in October. He jetted into town, swept into the Ritz, met his big new booster, Giancarlo Giammetti, the "honorary president" of Valentino, for the first time at the Valentino show.
Azrouel came to promote his spring collection, which is now heavily supported by Neiman Marcus. "I am not a designer who wants to follow trends," the charming 32-year-old told me. "I taught myself everything, never went to school. I came to America with $500."
