Congratulations to Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough-i.e., Proenza Schouler-for winning the inaugural CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Prize. What made their victory all the more special was the fantastic quality of the other finalists. It was an inspiring but difficult judging process. Each of these uniquely talented finalists-diverse as they are-has what it takes to succeed commercially and creatively. They all represent the future of American fashion. One quality that sets Proenza Schouler apart is that they have forged a strong aesthetic identity in a very short time. Their spring 2005 collection has real presence and maturity and represents an extraordinary accomplishment for a duo still in their early 20s; and their new shoe line is simply amazing.
The two runners-up-Cloak, by Alexandre Plokhov, and Habitual, by Michael and Nicole Colovos-are also remarkable for their focus and flair. It is rare to find a new star in menswear, and Plokhov is the most exciting talent that New York has produced in nearly a decade.
