With his silver hair and slight British accent, the art dealer James Danziger is one of the few people who could play themselves in a movie. Now, after five years away from the New York gallery scene, he has reappeared in Chelsea with Danziger Projects. And thanks to the reputation he earned in the nineties at his namesake gallery (which began in Soho, then moved to the Upper East Side), where he showed such photography masters as Annie Leibovitz and Henri Cartier-Bresson, the entire art world- including A-list clients like Ralph Lauren and Jodie Foster-will be watching.
His new operation is leaner and looser. "A project space is more contemporary and can be more spontaneous than a traditional gallery," says Danziger, 51. "It's a completely fresh start."
