It is a very cold Sunday afternoon in February, the day before Oscar de la Renta is to present his fall 2004 collection, and the designer is putting finishing touches on the 54 looks that will be sent down the runway under the tents at Bryant Park. For two nonstop days he's been sizing up the models and tweaking the clothes, adding a ribbon here, subtracting a ruffle there, whipping up a short strapless dress-on the spot-to go beneath a gorgeous gold coat "just in case it opens."
