To consider the phenomenon of Stacy Ferguson, a.k.a. Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, is to grapple with at least the following two questions. One, why would a hip-hopping, hoodie-obsessive tomboy from the numbing sprawl of the L.A. County/ Orange County border come up with Armani as her designer of choice? Two, how did she get that rock-solid belly?
To tackle the latter question first: toe dips, 20 a day, done very slowly, followed by an intense abdominal squeeze. The 29-year-old singer, who joined the Black Eyed Peas almost inadvertently-they needed a female vocalist for "Shut Up"-hails from Hacienda Heights, California. In fact, she still lives there, in Mom's suburban house. (Ferguson returned home four years ago after a period in which she "got lost.") As a consequence, she has a penchant for Orange County surfwear from Volcom, rings in the shape of turntables, Clarendon tees, pocket chains, Adidas Superstars, Dickies, tank tops, and piercings. It's that punked-out, Chicana-influenced, butt-kicking approach to glamour that Gwen Stefani, another OC girl, has recently taken global with L.A.M.B.
"It's very important to wear things that represent me," says this spirited beauty. "For our first performance at the MTV Music Awards, I got an Adidas satin sweatsuit and did it up with question marks"-a BEP motif-"and wore tennies. Will [her bandmate] said, 'Next time, Fergie, wear a dress.' "
Onstage, her aesthetic tends toward the utilitarian. "The pants are baggy so that I can move," she says. "The tops are small so that you can see the movement of my body. And there's always a hoodie because ...
