It occurred to us as we put together this issue-the fourth dedicated to great style at every age-that one could do no better than take inspiration from women designers and models who have not only seen it all but, quite possibly, worn it all. And so, this year, the wonderfully grown-up yet individualistic looks from the fall collections are worn by models whose ages range from 20 to 62; and our profiles of notable women focus on fashion professionals such as Stella McCartney, Kate Spade, Miuccia Prada, and Carolina Herrera, who are icons of nuanced, generationally appropriate glamour. For the recent CFDA awards ceremony (at which she was honored with the International Award), Miuccia Prada wore a simple cashmere sweater, a pleated skirt to the knee, and a wreath of diamonds in her hair. It was brilliantly chic: Miuccia had intuited that, for a woman in her 50s, hair can be a fulcrum of fabulousness.
Carolina Herrera is someone whose style is so consistent-I can't remember a time when she did not have an Evita coif and an immaculate white shirt-that either she has stumbled onto the elixir of eternal elegance or she is a walking master class in how to subtly vary a winning theme.
