Feb. 28--A year ago, establishing a major Internet network connection point was just an idea floating among a group of local telecom industry executives.
This afternoon, a reception will be held to show off the progress on the $160 million technology center that will house the NAP of the Americas, which figures to be the fifth major network access point for Internet traffic in the United States.
Crews have been working double shifts to raise the massive, bunker-like structure of concrete and steel on the northern edge of Miami's downtown. Intense work now begins on completing the interior.
Terremark Worldwide, which is owner and operator of the NAP, also faces the challenge of finishing the project on time and on budget. It will need at least another $50 million to complete the project in a market where there are no easy lenders.
