Feb. 25--When Maxwell Winches was offered a chance to sell its products online to boat builders and marine equipment retailers, the question was whether the Internet could really open new doors for this New Zealand manufacturer.
Using Marex.com, a Miami-based online marketplace dedicated to the marine industry, Maxwell took the plunge and put its anchor handling equipment online. The company didn't have to buy new computers or hire a roomful of techies to make the move.
"Marex got our name out to customers we normally don't talk to," says Bob Thompson, accounting and administrative manager for Maxwell, which has its U.S. outpost in Costa Mesa, Calif. Thompson says the per-transaction fee seems "almost insignificant" when compared to the benefit of bringing new business to Maxwell, which traditionally did its marketing at boat shows and through trade publications.
