Feb. 28--For more than a decade, Sawgrass Mills has dominated the outlet shopping scene in South Florida. With Thursday's opening of Dolphin Mall in West Miami-Dade, bargain shoppers will get another option.
While Dolphin will be a major new attraction in Miami-Dade, it's not expected to be a direct threat to Sawgrass, about 30 miles north in Sunrise. Analysts expect both malls to carve out their own territory in South Florida's competitive retail market.
"We're not interested in fighting with Sawgrass," said Michael Swerdlow, whose Hollywood-based Swerdlow Real Estate Group is developing the mall in partnership with Taubman Centers. "They're far enough away that everybody can coexist. This mall is in the geographic center of Dade County, and it will do well on its own."
The 1.4 million-square-foot Dolphin Mall in unincorporated West Miami-Dade will be a outlet and entertainment mall with a South Florida flair and a focus on targeting Latin consumers....
