Austin, Texas, Financial Staffers Take Advantage of Growth in Career.

Feb. 26--AUSTIN, Texas--Bambi Flynn was laid off, and then she got a raise.
After Austin Internet software company Vignette Corp. told her it was eliminating her position as an accounts payable manager, Ms. Flynn decided she'd wait until she got a job with similar pay and responsibility, even if other offers came up first.
After only three weeks, AstroTurf maker Southwest Recreational Industries Inc. offered her an accounts payable manager job with higher pay than her old one.
"I had been expecting something lower, something close to my salary at Vignette," said Ms. Flynn, who turned down another opportunity at a start-up for more stability. "I was holding out for something in that range, but how long I did that would probably depend on how long I could live on my severance pay."
Ms. Flynn did what most Austin finance workers caught in the retrenchment hope to do -- she bided her time for a job much like her old one. But time is becoming scarce for others seeking financial positions in the region.
