Feb. 28--NAPSTER CHANGING MUSIC INDUSTRY: Napster Inc. may be fighting for its life as it heads to federal court for another hearing on Friday, but whatever happens, the song-swapping service has changed the music industry forever.
Last week, the start-up based in Redwood City, Calif., revealed details of the offer it's been making to the recording industry as part of its plan to change from a free service to one that charges subscription fees.
Napster announced that it was willing to pay $1 billion over the next five years to recording labels, artists and others, if the entertainment industry would end its efforts to shut down the service.
