Feb. 26--Mexico has always been Texas' neighbor. Now, it's the state's best friend.
Productive industrial companies, a booming trade sector and a peaceful transfer of presidential power have combined to give Mexico unprecedented economic prospects.
In the midst of a U.S. slowdown, Mexican consumers are mitigating the blow to Texas' economy, according to several experts on The Dallas Morning News Board of Economists.
"Texas is doing so well because Mexico is doing so well," said Jorge Gonzalez, chairman of the economics department at Trinity University in San Antonio.
The notion that Mexico could aid a potentially ailing Texas surprised two of Mr. Gonzalez's colleagues on the panel of seven. Mexico's gross domestic product of $575 billion in 2000 pales beside Texas' $744 billion economy. In addition, Mexico remains a developing country with 40 million citizens living below the poverty line.
