Feb. 25--CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS HOPES MOVE EXTENDS COMPANY'S REACH: From his 48th-floor office in downtown Dallas, Tom Leppert, chairman of The Turner Corp., can monitor the massive arena project taking shape below.
The 46-year-old CEO of the nation's largest commercial construction company says there's only one hitch to the view: The construction-site banners are Austin Industries red instead of Turner blue.
Watching his competition build the $350 million American Airlines Center is a daily reminder of why one of his first leadership acts at Turner was to move the $6 billion building giant to Dallas a year ago after nearly a century in Manhattan.
"It's the kind of project we do a lot on a nationwide basis," says Mr. Leppert.
Turner, which built Madison Square Garden in 1967, is building stadiums for the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, as well as rebuilding famed Soldier Field in Chicago and Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
If the Cotton Bowl is renovated, Jerry Jones gets his new stadium or the city lands the Olympics, Mr. Leppert intends to be looking at a lot of Turner blue banners.
"Given our expertise and the local presence we now have in Dallas, we can deliver more value added to the client than any other construction company in the country," he says, clearly casting modesty to the wind.
