Feb. 21--Some of the nation's leading retailers predicted a smooth landing for the economy yesterday, in the face of plunging consumer confidence. "We do not see any indication that spending will slow further from its current levels," Wal-Mart CEO H. Lee Scott said yesterday as the world's biggest retailer reported the smallest quarterly profit gain in five years.
