Feb. 21--Internet grocer Webvan abruptly retreated from the Dallas area on Tuesday, leaving behind thousands of customers and about 220 employees.
The California company said that it couldn't afford to make Dallas a profitable market anytime soon and that it decided to divert its cash and attention to markets with better prospects.
The Dallas-Fort Worth market is Webvan's "least developed in terms of brand identity, and its most competitive," said company spokesman Bud Grebey.
