Feb. 21--Patrick Farrell knows the Dallas furniture market better than most.

He's not only the merchandise director for home furnishings at Fort Worth-based Pier 1 Imports Inc. He's the new owner of a three-bedroom home in Oak Cliff -- and $3,000 to $4,000 in recently purchased end tables, chairs and chests that helped increase area retail furniture sales to about $460 million last year.

The figure was good enough to boost the Dallas metropolitan area to eighth place in U.S. household furniture sales from 11th in 1998, according to the American Furniture Manufacturers Association. It's the area's first time in the top 10 since 1993.

Considering the area's burgeoning population, the growing number of retail furniture outlets and his own contribution to sales since he bought his house in August, Mr. Farrell isn't surprised.

"When you go out to Plano and the mid-cities, you just see miles and miles of new homes and apartments," Mr. Farrell said. "I think that's what's out there -- especially in the...
