Holidays give me hives. The arbitrariness of many of them disrupts my sense of meaning. Why, for example, should the year, or the century, or the millennium, begin on Jan. 1? It's just another winter day, like Dec. 31. Big deal.

At a personal level, why should I celebrate my or anyone else's birthday? No one feels any older. Celebrate, or rather commemorate, the day of a personal trauma, such as a divorce, the kind of stuff that ages you. And celebrate, if you wish, a personal rejuvenation. Say, plastic surgery.
