When Maria Elena Salinas began her career in broadcast television, nobody took her seriously when she identified herself as a reporter from a Spanish-language TV channel.
"Today, even the doors of the White House are wide open to Latinos," she said. "And ironically, they even speak in Spanish to us."
Salinas, the Emmy-winning co-anchor of "Noticiero Univision" and the most-respected newswoman in Latin television, is celebrating 20 years in broadcast journalism.
Born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents, Salinas began her career in radio. She switched to television in 1981 when she joined KMEX-TV, Univision's L.A.
