Brian Jacques, the most popular living children's author after J.K. Rowling, is going to prison.

Actually, the British author of the best-selling Redwall fantasy series is going to the Orange County (Fla.) Jail. When his current book tour, for the novel "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman," takes him to Orlando next week, he'll meet with youthful offenders who have read his books as part of their rehabilitation.

"I've gotten some moving letters from the lads who have read the books and learned some lessons," says Jacques (pronounced "Jakes"). "I want to meet them and give them every encouragement."

Jacques has written 15 novels in 17 languages and 19 countries _ as well as the new book, his first novel outside of the Redwall world.

"I was talking to my American publisher, Putnam, when they asked if I'd ever wanted to do something else, and I thought, thank God," Jacques says. "I'm a writer, with more ideas than I'll ever be able to write. You don't want to go to that great library in the...
