Mar. 16--It's not Biscayne Bay, but the Florida Marlins on Thursday got what they consider the next best thing -- a home for their proposed ballpark on the Miami River.
Now the team must persuade the Miami-Dade County Commission and Florida Legislature to help pay for it -- a battle that may be tough in Tallahassee.
By a 4-1 vote late Thursday afternoon, Miami city commissioners voted to let the ball club build a new $385 million stadium just west of the Knight Center, on the northern bank of the Miami River.
Only Commissioner Arthur Teele Jr. voted against the site that was endorsed by Marlins owner John Henry, Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, Miami Mayor Joe Carollo, and most of the 500 or so in attendance at the Manuel Artime Center in East Little Havana.
