Mar. 15--The tab for the billion-dollar expansion of Miami International Airport is rising once again because of cost overruns and previously unforeseen expenses, and carrying out the massive job will take an additional two years, county officials said Wednesday.
The airport expansion was supposed to cost $5.4 billion and be completed in late 2006, but the new estimated projection is $6 billion with a 2008 completion date, said Carlos Bonzon, the senior airport official who recently assumed oversight of the job.
Bonzon hastened to note that airlines and airline passengers -- and not Miami-Dade taxpayers -- will bear the cost increase. The airport is financing most of the expansion through selling bonds mostly backed by revenue from the airlines, but also from...
