Mar. 29--Two decades ago, college students from around the country clogged Florida's beaches in the annual spring ritual of blowing off some serious steam. This year, Panama City stood as one of the last outposts for what is held by many as the quintessential Florida spring break.
Some Florida cities that once welcomed spring breakers, among them Fort Lauderdale and Key West, are turning their backs on students, seeing them as more trouble than they're worth. Other cities, like Daytona Beach and Orlando, merely tolerate the raucous influx.
Only in the Panhandle are breakers still gold.
"There's always some pros and cons to spring break," said Jayna Leach of the visitors bureau in Panama City, where half a million partying students injected $135.7 million into the economy last year, numbers that are expected to be topped this year. "Some residents still don't like it....
