Mar. 29--The three major unions representing American Airlines employees opposed the purchase of Trans World Airlines, they said Wednesday in a letter to chairman and chief executive Donald J. Carty.
While the unions apparently can't block the deal, labor experts said, the joint statement puts pressure on the airline to make the employee groups happier.
"We do not come to this conclusion easily or quickly. On the contrary, we reach it only after careful consideration of the long-term best interests of all past, present and future members of the American Airlines community," stated the letter, signed by the presidents of the Allied Pilots Association, the Association of Professional Flights Attendants and Transport Workers Union.
