Mar. 26--The stock market late last week began to flash that come-hither smile again, but prudent investors should proceed with caution.
The Dow Jones industrial average cut a 380-point loss by 75 percent in the last hour of trading Thursday and then posted a fine rally Friday. The much-maligned Nasdaq composite index actually gained 2.2 percent for the week, its first positive week in two months.
But market experts caution that last week's rally probably does not mark the end of the bear market or that the sluggish economy is about to take flight. In short, it proves nothing, said Bryan Piskorowski, market analyst at Prudential Securities Inc. in New York.
