Mar. 25--Many online operations are struggling these days, but a Miami company is gaining ground by trading on a name that's more than 200 years old.
Beethoven.com is broadcasting live classical radio on the Internet. Launched last February, its roots are in the old WTMI, South Florida's classical station for more than 21 years. The website's parent company has the same ownership as the firm that owned WTMI until last year.
Beethoven.com is rapidly gaining listeners worldwide, from Japan to Kuwait, Germany to Brazil. But more importantly, says CEO and founder Howard "Woody" Tanger, it's attracting online advertisers and delivering revenue.
It ranked No. 1 among all webcasters in the world in December, according to latest Arbitron Webcast Ratings available. The rankings are based on the total number of hours that listeners tune to a given channel. Many Beethoven.com listeners tune at work.
Beethoven.com had nearly twice as many listeners as the No. 2 webcaster, WABC-AM, a New York-based talk, news and information radio station.
