Mar. 23--Charles Schwab, the nation's No. 1 discount brokerage, said yesterday it will slash up to 13 percent of its workforce -- as many as 3,400 jobs -- as stock trading has tanked and promises to remain in the dumps.
None of the 12 New York City branches will be closed, a company spokeswoman said, but there will be cuts in parts of its business that have taken the worst hits.
