Mar. 23--Newsweek management has jolted some of the magazine's own staffers by naming a No. 3 editor from outside the ranks of hard news.
Chairman and editor-in-chief Rick Smith and editor Mark Whitaker yesterday announced the hiring of Dorothy Kalins as executive editor, a title that's been unused for some time.
She's widely admired for her work as editor of the hot Metropolitan Home in the 1980s and as editor-in-chief of the visually striking Garden Design and Saveur for the past seven years.
