Mar. 30--WASHINGTON--The House took another step toward enacting President Bush's tax cut package Thursday, and overwhelmingly approved $399 billion in tax relief for millions of married couples and for children.
The bill would cut taxes for almost all married couples, including about 25 million who currently pay more than if they were single. The legislation also would eventually double the $500 child tax credit, including $100 in relief that would become effective this year.
The 282-to-144 vote came as 64 Democrats crossed party lines to vote with Republicans. Among Texas lawmakers, five Democrats joined the delegation's 13 Republicans to support the legislation.
The bill would fulfill a long-held Republican goal of providing relief from the so-called marriage penalty, an objective also supported by many Democrats. Republicans said their bill would return money to families, who could make better decisions than the government about how to use it.
