Mar. 30--H. Martin "Marty" Haag, a longtime broadcasting executive for Belo and WFAA-TV (Channel 8), has won the industry's most prestigious honor, the George Foster Peabody Award, for his career directing news coverage.
Mr. Haag's award was one of 34 announced Thursday for excellence in broadcasting and cable. Other recipients included two repeat winners: HBO's grim mob comedy The Sopranos and NBC's presidential drama The West Wing.
A Peabody also was awarded to Belo station KHOU-TV in Houston for the investigation that broke the story about tread-separation problems with certain Firestone tires.
The only individual recognized among this year's Peabody winners, Mr. Haag, 66, joins a distinguished list of past honorees that includes Edward R. Murrow, Ted Turner, Walter Cronkite and Alistair Cooke.
