Apr. 25--Those who knew Col Allan during his stint in the late 1970s as a New York correspondent for Rupert Murdoch's Australian papers remember a dogged newsman whose workdays were capped by serious drinking and more than a few barroom brawls.
"Sometimes, the only way to get him away from you was to put him out -- to knock him out cold," a colleague from the old days recalled yesterday. Another said "Canvas Back" was one nickname he earned for his penchant of winding up on the floor during fights.
