Apr. 25--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--The Florida Marlins' push for a state tax rebate received overwhelming support from an important Senate committee Tuesday, but even two South Florida supporters of the funding to build a new ballpark on the Miami River demanded the team do more for the local community.
Tuesday's 16-2 vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee boosts the chances of the bill making it to the Senate floor -- where it will face another challenge led by rebate foe Kendrick Meek, a Miami Democrat who wants to divert some of the Marlins rebate money to help local schools and boost environmental cleanup.
