Apr. 23--After a heavy dose of unfavorable news stories over the past two years, county officials were thrilled Friday to dig a shovel into dirt to ceremoniously break ground on a new runway at Miami International Airport.
With planes roaring during takeoff in the background on one of the existing three runways, speaker after speaker hailed the economic benefits to South Florida that the expanded capacity will bring. They also spoke of how the new runway, scheduled to open in 2003 and be used primarily for landings, will nearly eliminate delays that today average 20 minutes per flight during most of the day.
