Apr. 23--Starting a small business can be mind-boggling. Sometimes good advice can clarify doubts.
That's what Michael Umlauf found when he walked into the Fort Lauderdale office of the Service Corps of Retired Executives. SCORE is an organization that pairs retired business people who were successful during their working years with people who want to start businesses or need help with some aspect of an existing business.
Umlauf had an idea, a business plan and a fledgling company. Sol Coen had owned and operated successful service stations and a truck and trailer rental outlet in Cleveland for 48 years, and had been a SCORE counselor for more than two decades. He thought Umlauf had the potential for success.
"You get so you can tell whether a person should go into business or not," Coen said. "After an interview, I felt like this young gentleman had something."
