Apr. 23--For years, Concord Camera has made low-priced, reloadable and disposable cameras for itself and others.
Big-name players in the field like Eastman Kodak and Polaroid, and retailers like Eckerd's and Walgreens, have all attached their names to Concord's handiwork. In its last fiscal year, Concord produced 33 million cameras.
But after 14 straight profitable quarters, Concord expects to show a loss today when it reports the results for the three months ended March 31. The company blames a slowdown in the photo industry and the economy for the poor numbers.
The softening market comes as Concord is set to catch the digital wave sweeping the industry. In the next few months, Concord expects to roll out a handful of digital devices that will give its product line a dramatic face-lift and return the company to profitability.
Among the products is a device that captures images and transmits them to a cell phone/personal digital assistant, which, in turn, can send the images anywhere. Users can conduct a video conference with another device that links with a personal computer. Among the companies Concord has teamed up with are Nokia and Hewlett-Packard.
