Apr. 30--LAST MONDAY, I laid out a series of reasons why investors should buy auto retail stocks. It was a pretty good call. AutoNation was up 12 percent, Sonic Automotive 21 percent, Lithia 17 percent and United Auto Group 54 percent. I felt pretty smart. Except for one thing: I had owned Lithia for two years and Sonic for one, and the stocks had acted like dogs the whole time.
