Apr. 20--From 800 to 1,000 jobs will disappear from Conseco's Carmel-based operations over the next 21 months as the company shifts work to operations in India, the financial services giant confirmed Thursday.

All told, about 2,000 jobs nationwide are expected to move to India, where labor is cheaper, by the end of 2002.

In addition, Conseco plans to eliminate 1,000 of its 14,300 U.S. jobs as it streamlines its operations in an attempt to cut $100 million in costs.
