May 11--It was an early spring for retailers and an early Christmas bonus for their shareholders yesterday.
April retail sales surged more than 4 percent on average -- and at some chains like the Gap, where sales dipped slightly, they came in far better than Wall Street expectations.
As a result, shares in companies like the Gap and Ann Taylor jumped, although some industry analysts are still skeptical about the reality of last month's performance.
