May 23--The Broward County Commission moved Tuesday to open the taxi concession at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to cabs not controlled by Jesse Gaddis, who has enjoyed a lucrative monopoly there for 15 years.
The county had drawn criticism from smaller and minority-owned taxi companies after its initial bid request for the 2002-06 cab concession went out earlier this month.
Under the bid requirements, only one company would have qualified: Gaddis' B&L Services, which operates under the Yellow Cab brand.
