May 23--A federal appeals judge expressed serious doubts Tuesday about upholding the majority of the criminal convictions against SabreTech, the aviation maintenance contractor linked to the ValuJet crash.

"I think there are problems in this very important case," said U.S. Circuit Judge James L. Edmondson during an appeals hearing in Miami.

SabreTech, which improperly prepared, labeled and packaged the oxygen-generating canisters believed to have caused the May 1996 crash, was found guilty in December 1999 of eight criminal counts of recklessly causing hazardous materials to be transported aboard ValuJet Flight 592, and one count of failing to train employees in hazardous materials.
