May 22--Howell Raines -- who advanced at The New York Times from national correspondent, to White House reporter, to London and then Washington bureau chief, to editorial page editor -- was named yesterday to the top job of executive editor.
The promotion of the Birmingham, Ala.-raised Pulitzer Prize winner to the powerful journalistic post came as little surprise inside and outside the paper.
