May 31--University of Miami researchers have developed a new technology to embed a digital watermark into audio files that could prevent illegal duplication and piracy over the Internet.
It's part of effort to prevent file-sharing companies like Napster from allowing the free distribution of music and other information.
Researchers say that the innovation could have a significant impact on the illegal duplication of audio and video files across the Internet by providing a new way to track information.
The technology, dubbed Hercules, was developed by UM researchers Alexander Iliev and Michael Scordilis in the school's College of Engineering. The work began two years ago, and grew out of graduate research done by Iliev, who earned his master's degree in music engineering technology from UM in last year.
