May 31--American Airlines' flight attendants union rejected binding arbitration in its contract dispute with the carrier Wednesday, which will start the clock ticking toward a possible strike deadline of July 1.
A walkout could come the week of the busy July 4 holiday and cause massive disruptions at Miami International Airport, where American dominates with about 50 percent of the passenger volume.
But negotiations are expected to continue, and both sides say they hope to reach an agreement. If the dispute is not resolved, the National Mediation Board could recommend that President Bush establish a presidential emergency board, which would delay a labor action by 60 days. Bush...
