May 31--The vacation season this year is tinged with some anxiety.
With summer coming into full swing, the vacation-bound are worried whether they can spend as much as they did last year. American Airlines is selling fewer seats to the getaway crowd. Industry experts -- in the state and in the nation -- have hopes but no assurances that vacationers will spend as much this year as last, with perhaps a small increase.
In San Antonio, "I don't think we're going to go gangbusters," said Doug Browne, president of the Greater San Antonio Hotel & Motel Association. With the Riverwalk and the Alamo, the city holds many of Texas' top tourism destinations. San Antonio could have a year that's slightly up to slightly down, he said.
Gasoline prices, 401(k) fears and swings in consumer confidence are among the galaxy of variables bedeviling summer travel this year.
