May 30--Miami Mayor Joe Carollo on Tuesday unveiled the details of his plan to build a downtown stadium for the Florida Marlins -- a proposal that for the first time calls for spending city property tax money on the ballpark.
Carollo provided the specifics shortly after Marlins owner John Henry gave his consent to move forward with the plan.
The proposal, which has been on Henry's desk for several weeks, would use $148 million from refinancing and extending Miami's bond debt, $118 million from Miami-Dade County in hotel tax money and about $120 million from the Marlins.
City voters would be asked to vote on the bond extension within 45 days of City Commission approval. Carollo said he would probably call a special commission meeting in the next 10 days, so a referendum would be held at the end of July or early August.
