May 30--Merger talks between Alcatel SA of France and American telecommunications giant Lucent Technologies Inc. fell apart Tuesday over disagreements about the makeup of the executive suite and board of directors.
The companies had been negotiating in earnest for several weeks, and people familiar with the talks were optimistic about the deal until early this week.
Lucent, of Murray Hill, N.J., and Paris-based Alcatel issued a joint statement calling off the deal, but declined further comment.
Executives held marathon negotiations in France over the weekend and seemed to agree on a management arrangement giving Alcatel more control, people close to the situation said...
